Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
