Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
