Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
